Challenges of translating a video game
In April 2016 I was invited to give a talk at the Berlin Game Scene Talk & Play event. Spontaneously titled "Adventures in Game Localization", I talked about a few of the main challenges we game translators face when translating a game for our respective markets. The audience consisted mainly of game makers and gamers, but a few of my awesome translator colleagues from Altagram also came to support me.
I had already planned to leave Berlin behind me to spend a few months in Frankfurt and around Europe before moving to the US. But I couldn't resist the opportunity, so I enjoyed our vibrant capital for another week. I hope you'll enjoy the result. I had never spoken about my work in front of so many people before. I was nervous and pretty pregnant, so please bear with me :)

The presentation was very well received. Most of the game developers there didn't have a clue about the problems we game localizers face every time we translate a game and how they unintentionally don't make their games localization-friendly. Some of them came to me afterwards to learn even more about the translator's side of game localization. It was awesome to see the developers' genuine interest in our work, and I hope I influenced at least some of them to make the whole localization process just a little bit easier for all of us.
